What is PE and Sport Premium for primary schools?
The PE and Sport Premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils. The Government are spending over £450 million on this funding over the 3 academic years.
Allocations
Schools receive PE and Sport Premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6.
Accountability
Since September 2013, Ofsted inspections report on how primary schools spend their PE and Sport Premium funding. Additionally, schools must publish details of how they spend the PE and Sport Premium funding on the school website.
Funding for 2023 to 2024
Schools with 16 or fewer eligible pupils receive £1,000 per pupil. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil.
How to use the PE and Sport Premium?
Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils, but they are free to choose the best way of using the money.
For example, schools can use the funding to:
- hire specialist PE teachers
- hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
- provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport
- run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
- run sports activities with other schools.
